Well, for one thing, we'd all miss our favorite TV shows for awhile.
I'd like to think yes, we would all work together, but I doubt it would change the nature of humans.
It'd be like trying to undo millions of years of conditioning by offering the subjects a lollipop if they'll be nice to each other.
Suspicions and fears wouldn't go away, they'd just change.
I'm sure there would be plenty of people stirring that cauldron too, just like they do in the media today.
These guys thrive on polarizing people, and they don't stop just because Rome is burning. I can just imagine the nonsense they'd spew over first contact.
Then, in the interest of calming people down, the government would consider shutting these guys down.
Then there'd be outrage over censorship.
At any rate, I don't think we'll get the news of contact all at once.
I think it would be more likely that we'd be conditioned for face to face contact by increments over time.... even generations.
If that were going on now, I'd say the next step in the conditioning would be the interception of an intelligent signal. Not something too threatening, like a signal aimed directly at and about us; just a random signal.
So, whether conditioning is going on now, or at some later date, I think conditioning it will be.
It'd be too disruptive to land in Red Square, or on the White House lawn.
