Do you finally have snow?

We do, but I'm not sure how long it will last.
We went on a good walk today and the snow was fairly wet.
It's been raining, so it's hard to say how long it will last.

I like the snow, but it has been a nice break from shovelling* it of late.

*In Canadian English, we double the consonant to keep the vowel before it short, before adding 'ing'.

Wait... I'll go look.

OK... Back.

It looks like about a half inch on the ground.
That will disappear tomorrow.
I believe it will be well above freezing.

So far, it's been a pretty brown winter.
When I looked out to check I found a flyer for snow removal.
It said they had a great price of $325 for the season.

Ha! I doubt I'll spend more than $60.... Maybe less.
In fact, I don't think I had my driveway done at all last year.
Wait... It might have been last year when I had a guy that was doing street work use his front loader to clear the plowed ice chunks at the end of the driveway.
I gave him $20.

I told him if anyone asks, I'll deny it.

On doubling the consonant... Sometimes we do... Sometimes we don't.
It's so confusing.

Oh yeah... Now we have a little of the white stuff.
It looks like about 2 or 3 inches.
That's not bad.

So many of the little oddities seem totally arbitrary.

I always assumed it was because in the early days most Americans didn't have much of an education, so they butchered English a bit and that became "common usage", and in turn made it to the dictionary.

Ha! Maybe for Webster it was a conscious, or unconscious act of defiance.

Yeah, you Americans can thank Webster (the man who wrote your main dictionary) for severely changing spelling, etc. to a non-British way.

Our daughter listens to podcasts from "Stuff You Should Know" & they have an interesting one about just that.

No.
Wednesday it will warm up again.
I like El Niño. Despite that climate change is bad.
Merry Christmas Tris and Happy New Year.

Thanks Phil.
It's been so busy here at home, I haven't had the time to drop by.

But now that our company is gone & our daughter & her husband have gone to his parents' home for the night (nearby), I can check in here once again.

We're supposed to get cold weather close to -18 degrees C, not sure what that is in Fahrenheit temperatures, so I need to get the clear plastic wrap on some windows ASAP.

No, I haven't heard from Dixie -- wonder if he still lives at home or if he has net access anymore -- ??

How have your holidays gone thus far? Are all in your immediate family healthy?

Tris, I am so always happy when you stop by here.
I hope you had a nice Christmas and Happy New year.
Have you heard from Dixie? I hope he is OK.
Next week we are going to have an ice, rain and snow mix. That is always a dangerous mix and impossible to shovel.

Merry 2nd Day of Christmas, Philosopher!!
