This afternoon, I snowshoed for ____ hour(s). Fill in the blank. The correct answer will entitle you to 'win' the opportunity to shovel or snow blow ____ driveways! ... ;)

It was a glorious hike!
Today, I snowshoed on a trail where others also have also snowshoed, walked or cross-country skied.

Some kindly sort built tiny bird feeders and posted them along the walk and others fill them with bird seed, especially with sunflower seeds.
I spied nuthatches, chickadees, a black & white woodpecker, and one red squirrel munching away on those seeds.

One couple I met held out crushed peanuts in their hands as chickadees lit onto their hands -- they had to each pick a number and get in turn, they were that tame. I'd say the birds lighted on the woman's hand at 1 - 2 second intervals at one point; what a delightful sight that was.

After all that shoveling? Yikes!

OK.... I'll guess 3 again.

Saw a woodpecker, eh?

A couple of years back I had one bugging the heck out of me pounding holes in the side of my house.
Early morning.... rat-a-tat tat, rat-a-tat tat, rat-a-tat tat. Grrrrrr......

I put a few drops of castor and and cod liver oil in some water and filled a squirt gun.
The next morning as he was pounding away, I cracked the door enough to give him a shot.
Then I went out and filled the holes with plaster and shot some more of the mixture around the area he was pecking.

It worked.
Yay!

No more rat-a-tat tat.

The little guy was puttin' holes in my house.
Can't have that.... The varmints get in.

They sound like good people.
We need more of them in the world.

I remember back when I was working, someone made a comment about a coworker, regarding his "ways".
I said... Yeah but, if everyone in the world were more like him, it'd be a much better place.
That puts things in perspective.

Good on ya for not messin' with the robins.
Like my red squirrels. As annoying and destructive as they can be, they're just being red squirrels.
Ha! They were even storing crab apples in my car engine.

Anyway, there are ways to nudge them along to another location.

Hopefully someone in the new location didn't go ballistic.
The little guys have it a lot harder than we do and they're just trying to make the best of it.

I guess the mothballs were a way of communicating my concerns.
This place not for you.

And they don't charge people for anything, not even for delivery of larger items like furniture, fridges, stoves or the like.

While people are welcome to donate to their ministry, they won't accept any money from those they are helping at the time-- if people come back on another day and wish to donate money, then they would accept it.

Now, that's a class act...

Oh, and no, I didn't snow shovel for 14 hours!!
It was 14 driveways, but all in all, I doubt that I was shovelling for more than 2 1/2 hours of that time, as I had to wait for the snowblower to clear a path.
(I could have walked in front & gone right to it, but the people I was working with had a particular way they liked to do things, so of course I respected that and did it the way it worked out well for them. (!) They were also sick-- not any time to suggest something to them, even if I'd felt I needed to, which I didn't.)

These people that I'd helped, they receive 10 truck loads of stuff a week right to their home, all given to them for free. (That's in the summer months -- during the winter it is a bit less weekly.) They wash & sort through everything, organize it well, using most of their own home for this, and walk people through who have lost everything or just need a few things, are very respectful, give everything away in Jesus' name, and help & pray for all who would like that.

They do ask people for help, but not in a 'begging' or 'expecting' sort of a way.
I've known the wife since we were children, real people of integrity-- (!!!) I love them, they're the most selfless people I know!
Yet to walk past them on the street, well, they don't look very attractive in the world's ways, they don't have any kind of 'higher education,' they aren't even dressed in any great style -- but they're The Real Thing, K--, they really are...

If or when I can, I like to drop what I'm doing to help them out.
That's what they do for others.
If I had a spare $10,000, I'd give at least half of it to them (& pay off loans with the other half, lol! At least I'm honest!).

That was kind of you, to let the parents take the young ones out of the bird's nest first.

Yup, we did that too, with a tree that's ~still~ up near our house: just when we were going to cut it down (it's too near the septic system), Kevlar or I spied a robin's nest in the upper branches.

We didn't have the heart to take it down then.
There doesn't seem to be a 'best' time of the year to deal with these things. Perhaps now?
I'll have to bring it up to Kev soon--

A super soaker might do it on it's own, for something like a woodpecker! Too smart, ha!

And actually, by now Phil knows I don't only eat organic food -- I told on myself in her Q on organic food, lol!

Have a great day, Kraven!

OK... I won't tell.

Egads! 14 hours of shoveling and 2 of shoeing.
At this point in my life, I'd be in traction.
I remember working 12 hour days, 6 days a week.... That wasn't any fun, and that was more than a decade ago.

The shot for the woody wasn't a long one. My door is near one side of the house with just a window between it and the corner, where the woody was.
Plus, I had a super soaker that shoots a pretty hefty blast, so direct hit or no, he got some stink on'im.

As for the castor and cod liver oil, I think I'd read that varmints don't care for them.
My memory is saying maybe moles.... Not sure.
Kind of like ants don't like chalk lines.
It's one of those things that stick in your head.

I also had a problem with red squirrels in the attic, and a bird's nest in the chimney. Mothballs took care of that.
I waited until the young ones left the nest.
I just didn't want the parents back the following year.
The perpetual chirping drives ya nuts.

Castor oil, cod liver oil and water -- how did you come up with this solution?
Was it the grossest combination you had that wasn't lethal?

And you must be a good aim, too.

I snowshoed for two hours at a good pace.

But the driveways, they took from 5:30 - 9:30am, with 'breaks' in between as we drove to the next location.

It didn't feel like nearly as much work as I'd thought it would. I had slightly tense shoulders this morning, but that was all.

I felt *great* (!) after the snowshoe!
And I could eat any sweets I wanted, hehe!!
(But don't tell Phil! She thinks I only eat organic food! )

I found some chocolates tonight that I thought I'd served at Christmastime, so we've been feasting on junk food tonight -- gotta get rid of it somehow!

I fed over half of it to our company last night, to lessen the load -- they obligingly helped out.

Haha! Oh my, holes in your house! Nope, can't have that.
You are creative in coming up with solutions, Krave!

I like it!!
