Have you heard about research on a method to predict lighthing?

Supported by a two-year research grant from NASA, scientists in the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville are combining data from weather satellites with Doppler radar and numerical models in a system that might warn which specific pop-up storm clouds are likely to produce lightning and when that lightning is likely to begin and end.eat
This sounds like a great idea.

That'll be pretty cool.
I've had lightning strike within about 30 feet or so, 3 times in my life. (one of those might have been more like 50 feet)
It'll be nice to know when to expect it.

I found this a little weird.
"During the past 30 years, lightning has killed about 50 people in the U.S. each year, making it the country's third most common cause of weather-related fatalities (behind floods and tornadoes) during that time. It is estimated that lightning also injures about 500 people in the U.S. each year, although many lightning injuries go unreported."

I would have thought hurricanes would be up in the top 3.

It is a little scary.
With 3 close calls it's like it's aiming for me.
If it is, I'm glad it's a lousy shot.

All sound very scary. Seeing the light fall ahead of us was very disconcerting.

I'm glad you weren't driving any faster than you were.
My 3 close ones were... One sheered off a branch just outside my bedroom window.
Another came in through a glassless window in a building under construction where I'd taken shelter from the rain.
The other was when I was loading a truck out in a field.
It struck the ground.

One day we were driving to my mother's house shortly after she moved here. We did not think that the storm was bad. We were on a major street. We saw lighting and a light came down ahead of us. If we had been closer I would not be here.
