I don't know about "ever"... but certainly not today.
Personally, I think there are things that are greater than the sum of their generating parts.
Things that continue, after the generator is turned off.
I think light is a fair example.
Light is the product of some form of generator, but when the generator is off, the light continues on.
For example: If our sun were to burn out today, the light that it had previously produced, would still be traveling the Galaxy.
The Sun itself isn't light, but it is a producer of light.
I think the brain and consciousness are similar in that respect.
The brain may produce consciousness, but once produced, consciousness may be it's own being.
A being that could very conceivably continue, after the brain is off.
Although, like light, that independent being would no longer be influenced by the brain.
For example; light would change as the Sun changes.
In other words, that independent being, consciousness after the brain shuts down, may be locked into whatever it was when the brain last produced it.
Now, it makes ya think.... what do I want that consciousness to be when it leaves the nest?
Do I want it to continue conflicted and in perpetual turmoil... or in tranquility?
