The only ocean beach I'm familiar with is Laguna Beach California.
(I should say was familiar with)
That was back in the very early 70s, before it was overdeveloped.
Back then it was more like an artist's colony where people would sell their wares in tiny shops along the Pacific Coast Highway.
Very nice back then. I'm afraid I don't know what it's like now.

Isn't Spring Break happening about now? If it is, you might want to hold off for a bit.

Yeah, those 'fatal mistakes'--

I wonder how many are up at those pearly white gates thinking,
"If only I hadn't told her how fat she RELLY is..."

Well, there was that. But I was referring to a camping weekend with a group of friends. It was many years ago.

It's kind of funny how that works. There are several painful moments in my life as well, but I don't think I would eliminate them if given the opportunity.

I read a quote the other day. From who, I don't know.
The quote went something like this: There are no failures. Only successes and lessons learned.
Of course, they weren't talking about fatal mistakes.

I think you told me about that a while back.
She was at your place, no?

If I were to do the summer over again, I think I probably would, though I'd come a bit better prepared, psychologically, lol!

I would have gotten to know the author and older people who work there better, as well-- there were some very fun and interesting people who came through on a regular basis, and I met them all, as I waitressed.

I would have done more horse riding too, ha!!

Bummer.... That can be uncomfortable.... And painful if it's a fiance.
I once just spent a weekend with someone that, as it turned out, wasn't my type.
Very awkward for both of us for two very long days.

Had I said it was a bad summer?
Oh my! Yeah, I guess it was challenging, had it's good times too. I loved the surroundings and any hikes I went on.

Guess the hard part was finding out that this guy wasn't the one meant for me & having to stick it out until the end of the summerafter that-- we discovered that equally before half of the summer was over.

Sorry to hear it was a bad summer for you. Lessons learned, maybe?
Yeah, that incident I mentioned was back when there was a lot of animosity toward "Long-hairs" in some parts of the Country. Today's cowboys have longer hair than I did back then.

It sounds like you lived in rougher times, K.
Glad you got out of that tight spot in tact--

The cowboys in the area and cowgirls, were innocent enough.
But it was "the East against the West," so to speak, ideologically (and musically, ha!), so I've got to say it was quite the cultural experience!

Nope, it was my loneliest summer on record.
Creative, though: I'd brought my flute along and had composed some music.

The scenery, that made up for a lot, but I'd broken up with my then fiancé and now I realize that I was in a depression by the end of the summer and into the fall -- not very good footing to begin university.
Plus I was far away from family & friends, which makes going through a tough time even more difficult.

Nope... No lining. So yeah, you got it right, I'm sure.
Definitely dry wear.
Budding author at 60... Wow. And Genre... Double Wow.
She must have been quite the character.
I know what you mean about "Cowboy sorts" At least the ones from many years ago. One tried to run me down in Santa Fe.
I ran like a rabbit and got into the doorway of a brick building.
He didn't go so far as to jump the curb, but he did completely cross the street, and then veered off. Scary.

Sounds like it was a great summer for ya.

Oh, ~the poor dear~! I hope the bikini was lined with material inside or else I can pretty much figure out what happened... ...
But yeah, there's something about that very first time you see the ocean, it's a magnificent feeling...
I was five that first time, and I'll never forget it!

My summer in the High Sierras. yesss... that was memorable... I met "___" (trying to recall her name) that summer, a budding author in her 60's who was working on her first romance novel, and ~my~ did that woman have a vivid imagination! She was a delight, amidst all of these cowboy sorts in the area (not my former fiancé, thank God, haha!)

Ha! The bikini... I won't go into detail, but don't swim in one.
It sounds like you had more of an adventure than I. We just hung around the beach and toured the shops. My first trip there was the first I'd seen the ocean.
I never went very far south or north of that area. About a 90 mile radius, I guess.

At the end of the summer, I visited a friend in San Diego & toured San Francisco before making my way north to B.C. for university.

That's interesting, that you picked up those expressions from the comics ('the funnies' to you-- must be an American expression).

Yes, it's not always a pleasant experience to discover a favourite haunt has been developed almost beyond recognition--you still have your memories, though.

So you picked up a crocheted bikini for your girlfriend, eh?
What a debonaire, sexy thing to do--

The summer I turned 21, I travelled with my then fiancé to the High Sierras and we both worked in an off-the-grid campground that was on a well known hiking trail which extends from Mexico into Canada -- what an adventure that was--

Yeah.... "Egads" is an old one. I think I got it from the Funnies. I use Snoopy's "Good Grief" now and then too. Oh... and of course "Drat" and "Curses.. Foiled again". All cartoon stuff.
When I was there, there weren't near as many houses peppering the hills. There were little shops right across from the beach area. I bought a hand crocheted bikini for my girlfriend at one of them. They were mostly craft type shops. The beach itself had a volleyball net. It wasn't crowded at all. Nice place.
That picture makes it look like it's pretty overly developed now.
I didn't live there. I just knew some people out West and dropped in periodically. Usually just for a couple of few days. Maybe 5 at most.

Where in CA did you visit?

Trissinger

I had a 'stint' in Ca., as well--

I like the hills. What did it look like when you were there?
How long were you there, K--?

Trissinger

... I just said "Egads!" to my Hubby, but I never say that, I remembered reading it in some Archie comics when I was a kid, back in the '70's.

I guess that's one of your expressions, as well--

Gonna need an electric blanket and a large beach umbrella.

Egads!! I just looked up some pics of Laguna. This doesn't look even remotely like what I remember.

What with my budget these days, I'm more likely to have to settle for "Muskoka Beach" & shovel out a swatch of frozen sand to plunk down on--

~UUGH!!~ I just looked outside & it's SNOWING!!
